Israeli Forces Attack Muslim Worshipers at Al-Aqsa Mosque, Injure 153, Arrest 400

Israeli forces attacked, on Friday, thousands of Palestinian Muslim worshipers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Occupied Jerusalem, causing 153 injuries and detaining 400 civilians, the Palestinian News & Information Agency (WAFA) reported.

Israeli police carried a large-scale assault on the peaceful Palestinians after the Fajir (dawn) prayer, on the second Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, inundating the holy site with concussion grenades, tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steel rounds.

At least 153 unarmed civilians were injured by the brutal assault, including at least two deemed in critical condition, 27 of those injured were transferred to hospitals in occupied Jerusalem for medical treatment, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

The PRCS added that among the injuries were journalists and paramedics, and the majority of the injuries were sustained in the upper body.

Palestinian lawyer, Muhammad Mahmoud, told WAFA that the occupation police transported the hundreds of detainees by bus to an interrogation center.

Occupation forces also shattered many windows of the third most sacred holy sites in Islam, causing widespread damage throughout the compound.

The Israeli assault provoked a number of groups to denounce the violent attacks on peaceful worshipers at the holy site.

The spokesman for the Palestinian Presidency, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, stated;

“What is happening of the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the entry of the occupation forces into the tribal mosque is a dangerous development and desecration of sanctities, and it is tantamount to declaring war on our Palestinian people.”

“What is required is the immediate intervention of all international parties to stop this barbaric Israeli aggression on Al-Aqsa Mosque, so that things do not get out of control.”

The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs condemned the attack and warned of the prospect of a religious war;

“What happened after dawn today of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in general, the desecration of the Al-Qibli Mosque, the smashing of its windows and storming with shoes, and the exposure of the safe Muslim worshipers inside it is a push towards a religious war.”

The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs

The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs urged all Palestinians to guard the Al-Aqsa Mosque and confront the occupation against further assaults on the purely Islamic holy site.

The spokesman for the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ambassador Haitham Abu Al-Foul, called the attack a “flagrant violation”, warning of the repercussions of this escalation, holding the occupation authorities directly responsible for the outcomes.

Abu Al-Foul demanded the Israeli authorities to abide by their obligations as the occupying power in accordance with international humanitarian law (IHL).

The following is a portion of the report on the attack by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR);

“PCHR strongly condemns IOF’s suppression of the Palestinian worshippers and raid and desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque and its chapels as well as firing live and rubber bullets, sound bombs and teargas canisters inside it.  PCHR warns of the serious repercussions of the escalating violence and settlers’ conduct that is backed by IOF’s official protection.”

“PCHR also reiterates its call upon the High Contracting Parties to the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention to fulfill their obligations under Article 1; i.e., to respect and ensure respect for the Convention in all circumstances and their obligations. PCHR believes that international community’s silence conspiracy encourages Israel to commit more violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including creating a Jewish majority in occupied East Jerusalem.”
