Israeli Forces Injure Dozens of Palestinians at Anti-Settlement Protests in the Occupied West Bank

Israeli occupation forces suppressed, on Friday, several non-violent demonstrations across the West Bank, injuring many Palestinian civilians and detaining at least five foreign activists, local sources reported.

KUFUR QADDOUM

In the northern occupied West Bank village of Kufur Qaddoum, east of Qalqilia city, Israeli forces suppressed the weekly procession, opening fire with rubber-coated steel rounds, concussion grenades and tear gas canisters, injuring dozens of protestors.

Soldiers shot and injured at least seventeen protestors with rubber-coated steel rounds and caused dozens more to suffer the toxic effects of tear gas inhalation, according to the media spokesman for the popular resistance, Morad Eshteiwi.

He added that all those injured were treated on site by local medics.

A large crowd of demonstrators marched from the local mosque towards the closed road at the main entrance to the village, carrying flags and chanting against the occupation of their land.

Masked Palestinian youths burned tires to obstruct the soldiers’ view, hurled rocks and returned tear gas canisters toward the attacking army.

In 2003, the occupation authorities closed the road at the main entrance of the village, for the exclusive use of the illegal Israeli settlers in nearby colonies.

The closure of the road forces Palestinian travelers to take longer routes to reach Nablus city to the east, the nearest commercial center, resulting in further isolation and hardship.

Since 2011, local Palestinians have gathered on Friday and Saturday to demand the reopening of the main road to the village, and reject the ongoing colonization of their land.

BEITA and BEIT DAJAN

Israeli soldiers attacked peaceful protestors in Beita town south of Nablus city in the northern part of the West Bank, injuring at least five Palestinian civilians.

Occupation forces fired rubber-coated steel rounds and tear gas canisters at Palestinian youths who demonstrated against the continuous colonization of their land by illegal settlers.

According to Ahmed Jibril, the Nablus director of the emergency and ambulance services of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, one young man was shot in the back with a rubber-coated steel round, while at least four others sustained inhalation injuries as a result of exposure to tear gas.

East of Nablus, in the village of Beit Dajan, Palestinians assembled in rejection of the Israeli expansion of its illegal colonies in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The army opened fire with tear gas canisters, in an attempt to disperse the non-violent protestors, which caused at least a dozen protestors to suffer the toxic effects of tear gas inhalation, according to Jibril.

HEBRON

In the Bab Al-Zawiya area, in central Hebron, in the southern part of the occupied West Bank, occupation forces attacked Palestinian civilians who confronted the army, injuring dozens.

Sources stated that soldiers opened fire with live rounds, rubber-coated steel rounds, and tear gas canisters at the unarmed civilians, shooting and injuring three young men with expanding “Toto” ammunition.

Israeli forces continue to utilize expanding bullets on unarmed Palestinian civilians, despite the fact that they are illegal under international law, proving the complete contempt and disregard the occupation has for international law.

Dozens more sustained inhalation injuries when soldiers fired tear gas at the young men and local shops in the area.

MASAFER YATTA

In Masafer Yatta, a collection of 19 hamlets located south of Hebron, in the southern occupied West Bank, Palestinians and internationals gathered to express their rejection of the Israeli scheme to displace the indigenous communities.

Occupation forces opened fire with tear gas at the crowd of unarmed Palestinian civilians and foreign activists who marched in solidarity with the communities, a local activist reported.

According to Rateb Jabour, a local anti-settlement activist, soldiers assaulted demonstrators who gathered in the al-Juwaya and Ein al-Baida areas, causing dozens to suffer the toxic effects of tear gas inhalation.

The demonstration was held by the Committee in the Defense of Masafer Yatta, under the slogan “No to a new catastrophe in Masafer Yatta”.

Jabour added that the army detained five international activists, taking them to an unknown location.

The human rights group ‘The Alliance for Human Rights’ stated that a large turnout of activists from the area gathered to peacefully demonstrate against the Israeli policies of forcible transfer, held up signs which read, “Save Masafer Yatta” and “End Israeli apartheid”.

According to the B’Tselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, the 12 communities of Masafer Yatta are under imminent threat of being forcibly displaced by the Israeli occupation.

“After more than 20 years of legal proceedings, Israel’s High Court of Justice ruled on May 4, 2022, that the forcible transfer of hundreds of Palestinians from their homes and the destruction of their communities – for the clear purpose of taking over their lands in the service of Jewish interests – is legal. The justices have thus proved once again that the occupied cannot expect justice from the occupier’s court.”
