Israeli Forces Attack Weekly Anti-Settlement Protests in the Northern West Bank, Injure Dozens

Israeli forces suppressed, on Friday, a number of weekly anti-settlement marches in the northern occupied West Bank, injuring dozens of Palestinian civilians, local sources reported.

In the village of Kufur Qaddoum, east of Qalqilia in the northern West Bank, Israeli soldiers attacked the weekly non-violent procession against the illegal settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt).

The weekly march began after the Friday prayer at the local mosque, where local Palestinians assembled to express their rejection of the Israeli settlement policy, extrajudicial executions and settler attacks which go unaccounted for.

According to the media spokesman for the Qalqilia region, Morad Eshteiwi, occupation forces opened fire with tear gas canisters and rubber-coated steel rounds, shooting and injuring 5 civilians, and causing dozens more to suffer the toxic effects of tear gas inhalation.

Eshteiwi added that all the injured participants were provided with medical treatment by local medics on site.

Palestinians from Kufur Qaddoum and surrounding villages have organized weekly marches since 2011 to demand the re-opening of the main road leading into the village.

Israeli authorities closed the road to the indigenous Palestinian people in 2003, for the benefit of the illegal Israeli colonists in nearby settlements.

The closure of the road forces Palestinians in the area to travel longer routes to reach Nablus city, the nearest major commercial center, to the east.

In Beita town, southeast of Nablus, in the northern part of the West Bank, Israeli troops showered the weekly anti-colonization march with tear gas canisters, injuring a number of Palestinian civilians.

Local unarmed youths burned rubber tires with the intent to obscure the army’s vision, and used slingshots to hurled rock toward the attacking military.

According to Ahmed Jibril, the Nablus director of the emergency services with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, soldiers shot 2 civilians in the head with tear gas canisters, while at least 17 others sustained inhalation injuries.

During the weekly anti-settlement march, in the village of Beit Dajan, east of Nablus, Jibril added that occupation forces caused at least 11 civilians to suffer the effects of tear gas inhalation.
