A large military force invaded, on Monday, the town of Qabatiya, south of Jenin, in the northern occupied West Bank, injuring eleven, including one critically, and detaining one, according to local sources.
At approximately 6 am on Monday, Israeli special forces, along with the army invaded the town in pursuit of two “wanted” men, which triggered local youths to protest the invasion by throwing rocks at the armored vehicles.
It was reported that Israeli forces surrounded and besieged the home of Alaa Omar Zakarneh, positioned snipers on the rooftops of civilian homes, and opened fire, striking the besieged home as well as those nearby.
Armed Palestinian resistance fighters exchanged fire with the invading military force, before Zakarneh, a former prisoner, surrendered to the army, who detained him and took him to an unknown location.
During the exchange of fire, Israeli forces fired live rounds, tear gas canisters and concussion grenades at the besieged home and youths throwing rocks, injuring at least eleven civilians.
The father of the detained young man, Zakarneh, told SAFA News Agency that the military called over loudspeakers for his son to surrender, and added that,
“They asked us to leave the house, and when my youngest son came out, they hit him in the shoulder, and my wife, daughter and husband were injured by shrapnel from bullets and flying window glass during the clash.”Omar Zakarneh – father of the detained Alaa Zakarneh
“After the clash, the soldiers arrested Alaa and began to interrogate him about who was with him in the house and threatened him to demolish the house if he did not confess who was with him in the house, and brutally beat him.”Omar Zakarneh – father of the detained Alaa Zakarneh
A neighbor and eyewitness, Ahmed Hathnawi, stated that nine civilians were shot with live rounds by Israeli forces, one of whom is a doctor.
The confrontations continued for hours before the substantial military force withdrew from the town, leaving several civilians injured.
Sources stated that at least seven civilians were shot with live ammunition and were transferred to the Ibn Sina Hospital, including one who was shot in the back, his condition was deemed critical.
One of the young men were shot in the abdomen, while five others were shot in their legs. Four young men were transferred to the Jenin Governmental Hospital, one of whom was shot in the head with a high-velocity tear gas canister.
The nature of the other injuries was unknown at the time of this report.
Israeli media claimed that Zakarneh, a member of the Al-Quds Brigade, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad, was planning an ‘attack’ without providing any details.
The army searched for another ‘wanted’ Palestinian man, but was unsuccessful in locating him.
On August 9, 2022 Israeli forces carried out a similar large scale operation in the Jenin refugee camp, killing three Palestinian civilians, including two resistance fighters and a child.
Special forces accompanied the army which besieged and launched missiles at a civilian home, and exchanged fire with the armed resistance fighters, killing three people, and injuring 40, one of whom died from his critical injuries on August 23, 2022.
